I'm Virtually Broke
IF there's one thing I hate
about poker, it's the places I'm forced to play it in.
I have no problem with losing
£50 in 10 minutes, but I do object to it happening in a windowless room
full of men in their 60s who always win.
So for me, the arrival of
online casinos is like a straight flush, four of a kind and full house
rolled into one. They allow anyone with a computer and credit card to
gamble without leaving home.
To open an account at
ladbrokes.com all I had to do was enter my name and address, adopt a
username - DeucesDave - and confirm I was over 18. Within half an hour,
I was sharpening my five-card stud skills in one of the practice rooms.
The screen was filled with the
familiar green of the table, surrounded by eight seats, each displaying
a player's name. To the right was a message board, letting me speak to
my opponents, Cobrax and FullBoat.
At first, even though I was
only playing with 2,000 imaginary chips, it was nerve-racking. I put
down a small ante and was dealt two cards - a three and a four - and the
clock started ticking as I had to decide whether to play or throw in my
hand.
Within minutes I was down to
1,934, thanks to AdamHarry who walked in during my third hand, plonked
down on the chair next to me and proceeded to win non-stop. After
getting the hang of things, I left the table and clicked on the bank tab
to hand over my debit-card number and credit my account with £100.
Because the law prevents poker sites operating in the UK, the amount
appeared on screen as $182.
I rolled into another virtual
room, this time playing for real money and pulled up a seat between
Hedgehog and Wong88. The game was again five-card stud.
I placed my 10-cent ante down
and was dealt the three of clubs and the ace of spades.
