China to Confiscate Illegal Gambling Products
China's apex court will mercilessly punish gamblers and confiscate their
illegal gains under a new nation-wide government campaign to root out
the social evil.
"Heavy fines will be given to these offenders to deprive them of all
their illegal gains from gambling," Gao Jinghong, a judge of the Supreme
People's Court (SPC), said here yesterday.
The maximum prison term for gambling in China is three years.
According to the national anti-gambling office, gambling groups and
organisers of sports betting, horse races, online casinos and other games on the Chinese
mainland will be severely punished, the state media reported.
Employees of the state-owned organisations, who gamble and those who use
bribes, public money or embezzled funds for gambling are also major
targets of the clampdown.
China banned gambling, along with prostitution and drugs, in the 1950s.
In recent years, however, a growing number of wealthy Chinese,
especially corrupt officials, are gambling away millions in online casinos
outside the Chinese mainland.
