Schwarzenegger's Remarks on Indian Casinos Draw Protest
US Indian tribes in California protested Thursday the remarks made by
Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger who said Indians "are ripping us off."
Groups representing Indian gaming tribes said Schwarzenegger must
apologize for his comments on Indian casinos made last week at a San
Diego restaurant, calling them "insensitive" and "racist."
"When you hear him make a statement that is so blanket and across the
board, that Indians are ripping us off, I think we need an apology for
that," said David Lent, of the Piyute Tribe.
"It's almost racist. I don't see how he can make a statement that the
Indians are ripping us off. And, in California, who's been ripped off
over the years? It sure isn't Arnold Schwarzenegger," he added.
Schwarzenegger was campaigning against two measures to be put to the
November ballot, namely Proposition 68 and Proposition 70, which will
tax Indian casinos but could also allow them to expand.
"The comment, 'Indians are ripping us off,' refers to Proposition
70," said Schwarzenegger's spokesman Rob Stutzman. "Proposition 70 is a
rip-off."
Schwarzenegger also opposes Proposition 68, which would amend
California's constitution and statutes that demand Indian gaming
compacts being negotiated between the California governor and Indians.
"Casinos will be popping up left and right if these propositions win,"
Schwarzenegger said. "They will be in your neighborhood."
