Stakes are High at South Africa Casinos
The Eastern Cape is to press ahead with
licences for two new Eastern Cape casinos early next year.
One will be in the area between Mthatha and Port St Johns, while the
other will be in the region between Aliwal North and Queenstown.
Economic Affairs MEC Andre de Wet speaks enthusiastically about these
casinos, the construction of which is set to begin at the end of next
year.

develop as planned, the casinos will bring much-needed investment and
jobs in their construction and running.
He sees the casinos assisting in boosting tourism and economic
development in these areas. But there are other issues which must be
considered.

new casinos in one of South Africa's most impoverished provinces - and
for locating them in the poorest regions of the province.
Where will the punters come from to keep these casinos alive all year
long? Surely not from endless busloads of tourists and wealthy locals.
