Sandwich Shop Chain Founder Will Push For Bridgeport Casino
DERBY, Conn. -- The founder of the Subway sandwich shop chain is the primary investor behind
the Schaghticoke Indians and plans to lobby hard for a tribal casino in
Bridgeport, according to published reports.
Federick A. DeLuca acknowledged for the first time Thursday that he is
the money man behind the tribe, The Republican-American of Waterbury,
The Hartford Courant, The Day of New London and the Connecticut Post
reported Friday.
On Jan. 29, the Schaghticokes won federal recognition, which gives them
access to funding for education, health care and housing, and the right
to negotiate a gaming compact with the state. They are the fourth tribe
in the state recognized by the federal Bureau of Indian Affairs.
"There will be a lot of outside investment that will come in, a lot of
jobs created," DeLuca told the media Thursday night at the tribe's
offices in Derby. "There will be more entertainment options for the
citizens. It's all really quite good.
DeLuca said he financed much of the tribal nation's efforts to gain
federal recognition, a process that involved years of research and legal
work.
DeLuca, 58, went to high school and college in Bridgeport, where he
opened his first submarine sandwich shop in 1965 to pay for his
education. He also met his wife and got married in the city.
The Subway chain has grown to some 20,000 restaurants. DeLuca's personal
worth is as much as $1 billion.
He envisions a casino resort complex that would anchor a Bridgeport
comeback and help finance better schools and housing. He said he would
like to see a hotel, retail and convention center facility similar to
those at Mohegan Sun.
DeLuca said making money off the casino is not his goal.
