Native Peoples to set up Pharmacies in Casinos
While the debate rages on between Canada and the
U.S. regarding the legality of obtaining prescrition drugs through
online pharmacies, negotiations to open casino pharmacies have been
quietly taking place between U.S. government officials and native band
leaders on both sides of the border according to a report by the
National Post.
Indian bands in Manitoba and Minnesota are in discussions about
utilizing their special sovereign status as a possible loop-hole toward
the legal trading of prescription drugs across the Canadian/U.S.border.
Their plans would include pharmacies being set up in the native-run
casinos in both countries.
A Dakota Plains First Nation's spokesperson has told the Minneapolis
Star Tribune that the reason for choosing casinos to sell prescription
drugs is because of a casino's large clientele of the "elderly and
chronics", meaning older people and those who suffer from chronic
illnesses. At least one Republican senator has said that he would
endorse such a plan adding, "this could be as big as their gambling
business."
