Casino Bosses Harming City
Canadian Auto Workers president Buzz Hargrove thinks a change in
management at strikebound Casino Windsor might improve labour
relations.
"This is a crown corporation that's run by a management team that's
been brought in by the province," Hargrove said. "I've asked why we
would allow these people who don't want to bargain to manage us into a
position where it's going to harm the community, harm our members and
harm the provincial government in terms of revenue." Hargrove said
he will likely be in Windsor Sunday if asked to attend a rally called
by CAW Local 444 president Ken Lewenza in support of the 3,500
striking casino workers.
Hargrove said he would also urge others to attend the protest,
which Lewenza called for during a brief exchange Monday with casino
negotiators. No talks are scheduled 19 days into the strike by up to
3,500 workers.
"Local 444 CAW is calling for support for casino Windsor workers
who have been forced into strike action against an anti-union,
anti-worker employer that cannot be tolerated in our community,"
Lewenza said in a news release Tuesday.
"Casino Windsor projected revenue for the year 2003-2004 at $526
million. Casino Windsor can afford a fair and reasonable bargained
settlement but chooses not to."
"I trust Ken's judgment," Hargrove said by phone. "He's president
of the local union. He's also a national board member and a fine human
being and if he says it's time for a rally, we'll support him."
Federal NDP leader Jack Layton lent his voice in support of
striking Casino Windsor employees Tuesday during a speech to Windsor
labour representatives.
Layton called a recent newspaper advertisement outlining the
casino's position "disgusting" and an attempt to intimidate strikers,
and urged local NDP MPs Joe Comartin and Brian Masse to attend
Sunday's rally.
Lewenza told the audience the strikers belong to an industry that
is becoming more significant in creating jobs and thus deserve better
working conditions.
