Jaworski Readies Charges vs Online Gambling Operators
Sen. Robert Jaworski said Wednesday he is preparing to
file charges against Sports and Games Entertainment Corp. (SAGE) for
defying a Supreme Court ruling that banned online or internet gambling
in the country.
"Because there is no control in one's use of the
internet, online gambling has victimized many children," Jaworski said
in a dzMM interview.
He added that his office has received information that
at least three high school students have accumulated some P1.5 million
in debts because of online gambling. "Still many others get addicted to
it, ruining their education," he said.
Jaworski said the huge investment in online gambling
operations could also be a reason company owners continue their illegal
business. "I learned they invested as much as P500 million to run this
business," the former professional basketball player said.
The Supreme Court in January unanimously declared null
and void a franchise for online gambling that was given to SAGE by the
Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corp. six years ago.
