Statewide Vote Set on Missouri Casino Proposal Missouri voters will decide later this year whether to allow a casino
in the small southwest Missouri town of Rockaway Beach.
Secretary of State Matt Blunt on Monday certified the proposed
constitutional amendment for the ballot after verifying that supporters
had gathered enough petition signatures.
The state constitution currently allows casinos only along the
Mississippi and Missouri rivers. Rockaway Beach is located along the
White River near Lake Taneycomo.
"We thought from the beginning this is a winnable campaign, and we're
excited that we're now officially on the ballot," said Jeff Favre,
project manager for Southwest Casino and Hotel Corp., already chosen by
Rockaway Beach officials as their preferred developer.
The amendment -- which would only allow a casino at Rockaway Beach --
will appear on the August ballot, a spokeswoman for Gov. Bob Holden said
Monday.
Supporters of the casino have said it will stimulate their economy
and revitalize their city, once a tourist destination. Now the
577-person town has become stagnant, dwarfed by the nearby Branson
vacation community.
