The Biggest Gamble of His Life
The owner of the Silver Spoon café is selling up after
12 years to play high-stakes card games for millions of dollars on the
World Poker Tour.
Allan Hill, 49, plays his first tournament, a $10,000-a-seat competition
in Atlantic City, in September. He said he was fed up with the
restaurant business and was giving it up to follow his dream.
The tour will take him to a host of glamorous casinos and places around
the world including Connecticut, Las Vegas, Costa Rica and Paris.
Mr. Hill, who lives near Hamilton with his girlfriend, has played in two
tournaments on the World Poker Tour before – after winning free entry
through an online poker game and a local tournament.
His best finish is 108th out of 600 at Foxwoods Casino in Connecticut.
But he knows he will have to improve on that if he is to make a living
from playing poker. He needs to place in the top 65 to come home with
any cash whatsoever.
“No-one can afford to lose ten grand but it’s not going to kill me,”
said Mr. Hill who has won free entry to the September game, but will pay
the $10,000 entry fee for a seat at the table at Foxwoods in November
and in Vegas later in the year.
