Schaghticoke Chief Debate BIA Casino Changes
Schaghticoke Tribal Nation Chief Richard Velky Tuesday defended
Bureau of Indian Affairs rule changes that, he claims, will actually
make it harder for tribes to annex off-reservation land for casinos.
Velky issued a press release Tuesday in response to Connecticut
Attorney General Richard Blumenthal's claim Monday that the new rules
would do just the opposite.
"The attorney general has once again distorted the facts in his
overzealous crusade against the Schaghticoke Tribal Nation," Velky said.
What Blumenthal described as "highly significant changes silencing
state and local input on land annexation decisions" is a
mischaracterization, Velky said.
In March, the Bureau of Indian Affairs issued an amended checklist
for gaming and gaming-related acquisitions that made three changes to
the previous checklist.
Velky said the changes would: require an environmental impact
statement for large or potentially controversial casino projects;
