Sponsors Promote Online Wagering
Despite a federal crackdown on illegal online gambling,
a ``for-fun'' poker Web site run by one of the world's top off-shore casinos
is a major Boston Red Sox advertiser.
Partypoker.net was a primary Red Sox spring training sponsor, posting
signs around the team's Fort Myers, Fla., ballpark, and is currently
sponsoring a poker tournament between Sox and Yankees fans that airs on
the Sox-owned NESN TV network.
Billed as the ``world's biggest poker school,'' the site doesn't
allow cash gambling but is owned by the same company that runs
Partypoker.com - a high-stakes online gambling parlor based in Gibraltar
that yields pots of up to $7 million.
``To have an entity such as the Red Sox enter
into a contractual agreement with an Internet gambling company is
troubling and raises eyebrows,'' said Carey Theil, a board member of the
National Coalition Against Gambling Expansion. ``It is something they
shouldn't be doing.''
Red Sox spokesman Glenn Geffner did not return calls.
In a bid to crack down on off-shore gambling, federal officials are
trying to block credit card companies from doing business with online
casinos. And while Bay State pols have fought hard against casinos and
slots, there are no state laws against online gaming.
