Race Track Closes Over Dog Illnesses
Attendance at the track on Route 138 has dropped off noticeably in
the past week-and-a-half since a number of dogs at the facility
developed a viral infection known as "kennel cough."
The infection is notorious for quickly spreading among dogs in close
proximity, but can be successfully treated with antibiotics.
Vaccinations for kennel cough are available, but like the flu, there are
various strains of the virus.
Madan, a retired trainer who said he ran dogs in Florida in the 70s
and 80s and has been in the gambling business for almost 40 years, says
kennel cough is serious problem.
"Generally it's something that happens every year," he said,
finishing a Kool cigarette outside the park clubhouse. "It's like
whopping cough, you have to be careful."
With two casinos in Connecticut, video poker in nearby Rhode Island
and the rise in popularity of online gambling, attendance at tracks like
Raynham have decreased. The kennel cough outbreak certainly hasn't
helped the situation.
