Hands of Fate
Once you get used to your local game in your neighbourhood
casinos or a home game in your friend’s house then poker can be very
enjoyable, but arriving in Las Vegas for the World Series of Poker, any
thoughts you may have of a relaxing time are immediately banished. I’m
here to try my luck in a special one-day event taking place alongside
the main tournament. But poker over here is not a game – it’s an
industry.
To get to the main hall where the big event is played you pass
warehouse-sized presentation rooms full of displays from online poker websites,
poker bookshops, and shops peddling casino gambling accessories like cards,
chips and baize.
Your nervousness deepens when you arrive at the assigned table to
find yourself up against a group of individuals whose experience and
professionalism are immediately apparent; whether it be from the expert
way they handle their chips or their ability to make complex betting
decisions while talking on their mobile or chatting to a friend who’s
stopped by because they’ve just been knocked out at another of the
tables.
In comparison, I am laboriously slow in deciding what course of
action to take, and the impatience among the other players is palpable.
They seem incredulous at my questions of the dealer: “What’s the minimum
raise now?”; “Sorry, who else is in the pot?” Then, slowly, they become
suspicious that my apparent hesitation is an act, that I am some kind of
big player from the UK. A photographer taking my picture for this
article during the action just adds to that impression.
