Lottery in North Carolina Stalled in Senate
North Carolina is going to have to wait yet another year for a lottery, if
such even comes to pass. Currently, measures in the US Senate to legalize
the lottery did not fully pass - although it could have done so through a
loophole in the legislative process.
Gov. Mike Easley and Senate Leader Marc Basnight, who both tirelessly pushed
to pass the measure, commented that it could have been passed, but only at the
expense of making an unethical move at the expense of a senior senator who was
not in attendance at the General Assembly.
Easley and Basnight both worked hard to get the lottery legalized through
what seemed to be a never-ending series of phone calls and meeting with
anti-lottery lobbyists and senators. However, their attempts went unabated
all the way until the assembly finally adjourned in the early hours of the
morning.
The only hope now for the North Carolina lottery - at least for this year -
is that the Senate will deal with it at their next meeting. Since they
have not officially adjourned for the year - which they must do so by next
Wednesday or else they will have to come back later in the year - there is still
hope the Senators will wrap up their work on the matter this year.
