Most Oppose Casinos in Catskills According to Poll
Fifty-five percent of those who took an online survey conducted in
August by MidHudsonNews.com said they favor no casinos in the Catskills.
Up to five have been proposed. Fifteen percent of those who responded to
the non-scientific poll said they favored construction of three Native
American casinos, just under 11 percent favored five or more, and over
eight percent each favored the construction of one of two casinos.
Thirty-one percent of those who responded said casinos would not be
good for the region with 71 percent citing the negative impact on
traffic. Sixty-one percent cited negative impact on local infrastructure
like police and fire departments, and 51 percent said they would
increase crime.
Forty-six percent said there would be no benefits from having casinos
while 39 percent said there would be more jobs, 33 percent said they
would be a stimulus to the local economy and 25 percent said they would
have a positive impact on the tax base.
Respondents gave poor grades to their public officials in their
handling of the casino issue. Fifty-eight percent gave Governor George
Pataki an “F.” Sixteen percent gave him a “C” and six percent gave him
an “A.”
