Casinos in the Catskills Still on Hold
It may happen some day, but nobody knows when that will be. This
something is the approval and construction of a casino resort in the Catskill
Mountains of New York, where numerous attempts have been steadily trying to get
a law passed that would allow for at least one and as many as three casinos to
go up.
At one point in this mini-drama, New York Governor, George Pataki was pushing
legislation that called for five casinos. However, this scenario seems
more unlikely since that same legislation, which was submitted in the Winter of
'04 had been pulled by Pataki while he worked to settle disputes with Indian
tribes. This case, which has inadvertently slowed down the approval
process, was actually thrown out by court, citing it was not filed by the
appointed deadline.
So, for now, no casinos are going up in the Catskills, which desperately
needs a jumpstart for its ailing tourist industry. Some time will be
needed to work out the particulars of giving the St. Regis Mohawk Indians their
right to build operate a casino or two in the region. Whether the
Democrats get their way of letting the Mohawks operate a single casino, or the
Republicans get theirs by creating three casinos, one thing is for sure - at
some point in time, there will be a casino in the Catskills.
