Britain Revealed as World Online Spam Capital
City insiders say that banks, online casinos and betting services
based in Britain have paid out more than £80m to extortionists rather
than have their systems put out of commission.
Next month the government and businesses such as Microsoft, eBay and
the high street banks are to launch a multi- million-pound awareness
campaign called Get Safe Online urging people to guard their computers
against such threats with as much attention as they give to their home
security.
The internet industry is warning that Britain is falling behind in
taking precautions and has now become one of the most vulnerable
countries in the developed world.
It is against the law to send an unsolicited e-mail to a private
address but the Information Commissioner’s Office, which regulates the
internet, admits it has few enforcement tools.
The rapid growth of broadband technology in Britain — there are now
19m users — has created other problems. Unlike older dial-up internet
technology, broadband is permanently connected, meaning that it can be
used to send out spam e-mails 24 hours a day, often without the owner’s
knowledge.
